SketchUp Class in Cincinnati, October 10-11, 2015

SketchUp Class With Bob LangI will be teaching an introduction to SketchUp Class on Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11, 2015 at The Manufactory, here in Cincinnati. The class will follow the “Building Blocks of SketchUp” format, where you will learn how to use the program with basic geometric shapes. My computer screen will be projected, and we go back and forth between me showing the class a technique and the students practicing. As they practice I go through the room, looking over shoulders and coaching as needed. As the weekend progresses, you’ll work on modeling what you’re interested in. When you leave this class, you’ll be equipped with the skills to model anything you want.

When I first started teaching SketchUp, I realized that I needed to study what people struggled with. As I figured things out, I identified common hurdles and developed methods to help my students get over them without falling on their faces or banging their shins. After I started emphasizing basic skills and navigation at the start, every class has been a bit smoother, every group has left better equipped. Class size is limited so that I will have time to assist with specific needs and interests.

Specifics About This Class:

SketchUp Class With Bob LangLOCATION: The Manufactory is located on the North side of Cincinnati, just off the I-275 loop. It’s a wonderful makerspace (read more about it here) and we’ll be meeting in the computer lab.

TIME: Class will be held from 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday, October 10 and from 12 noon to 6 pm on Sunday, October 11. We’ll take a lunch break for about an hour on Saturday, and a mid-afternoon break each day.

WHAT YOU NEED: experience in SketchUp isn’t necessary, but you should be familiar with basic computer operations. You can bring your own laptop, or you can use one of the Manufactory’s desktop computers. (there are a limited number of computers available, if you want to use one, let them know when you sign up).

If you bring your own computer:

  • Bring a three-button, scroll wheel mouse. If you have a Mac, you’ll struggle if you try to use your Mighty or Magic mouse.
  • Download and install SketchUp directly from the SketchUp website. It doesn’t hurt if you play around with it some before class. There are some good video tutorials on the SketchUp website and here on ReadWatchDo.
  • Please note: when you download the program, it begins with a 30-day trial of SketchUp Pro. After the trial period ends, it will revert to the free version, SketchUp Make. The techniques shown in class will be possible with SketchUp Make, and we’ll discuss the differences between Make and Pro. (This post discusses the two versions of SketchUp).

Feel free to bring along a notebook, drinks and snacks. I provide several handouts during class.

WHAT DOES IT COST? The fee for the two-day class is $300 for nonmembers of the Manufactory. If you’re a member, you get a 20% discount, making your cost $240.

HOW DO I SIGN UP? Registration and payment will be made through The Manufactory.

IF YOU’RE TRAVELING:

The Manufactory is close to the intersection of Interstates 75 & 275 on the North side of Cincinnati. There are several hotels and restaurants nearby. If you’re flying, the Dayton airport is only a few minutes farther away than the Cincinnati airport in Kentucky. Fares are often significantly less if you fly into Dayton.
