Classes with Bob Lang at MASW in 2018

Sometimes the best things appear in the most unexpected places. You wouldn’t expect to find a woodworking school smack dab in the middle of central Indiana, but that’s the location of the Marc Adams School of Woodworking. MASW has been there for 25 years and the school has grown into an incredible facility, fully equipped for just about anything to do with working wood. When you combine a great facility, a wonderful staff and talented and experience instructors, a week or a weekend at MASW guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience. It’s an honor and a privilege for me to be invited to teach there, and this coming year I’ll be teaching one week-long woodworking class, and two weekend SketchUp classes.

Stickley Poppy Table Class — April 3-7, 2018

This class will meet Tuesday through Saturday, and we will be building reproductions of the Gustav Stickley Poppy Table. It’s one of my favorite pieces. At about 20″ in diameter and 20″ tall it fits anywhere (mine sits next to my Morris Chair) and looks great in any interior. If you have cats, they will appreciate the lower shelf. I first made this table for an article in Popular Woodworking, and there is a chapter on it in my book “Classic Arts & Crafts Furniture”, a compilation of my articles from Pop Wood.

Good furniture is part art and part engineering (this previous post discusses that in the context of this table) and we will have fun mixing those two elements in class as we tackle making a five-sided structure, then shape the components of that structure into an art nouveau stylized form. This is a “bring your own materials” class, and I always enjoy the choices students make in material selection. Original versions of this table were made of Mahogany or quartersawn white oak. It would also look great in cherry, walnut or maple.

SketchUp Weekend Classes — July 14-15 and July 21-22, 2018

I’ve taught SketchUp classes at MASW for quite a few years now. In the past, we’ve held week-long and week-end classes. The week-long classes can be overwhelming due to the number of consecutive hours. The weekend classes are less demanding, but it’s hard to cover a lot of territory in two days.

This year we’re trying something different; a beginner’s class will be held the weekend of July 14-15, 2018 and a more advanced class will be conducted the following weekend July 21-22, 2018. Students can take one or both classes. If you have no SketchUp experience, take the basic class. If you have some experience, or have previously taken a weekend SketchUp class at MASW the advanced class will take your 3-D modeling skills to the next level.
