Stickley Tabouret Reproduction

This little table is 16″ in diameter and the top is 18″ above the floor. It is made entirely from solid quartersawn white oak with through mortise and tenon joints where the legs meet the top and where the stretchers meet the legs. The leg-to stretcher joints are further secured with a pin through the joint.The two stretchers are connected with a half-lap joint. The legs are laminated from two pieces of solid wood, and a 1/8″ thick veneer is applied to cover the glue line. This is an authentic method that displays the flaked figure on all four faces of the legs.

The color is a “medium” brown. I used aniline dye to achieve the color, along with a coat of garnet shellac. A few coats of clear shellac were then applied, followed by a coat of wax.

This is an authentic Gustav Stickley design, but this particular table was not a factory production piece. It was featured as a do-it-yourself project in Stickley’s The Craftsman magazine. Production pieces had variations of the exposed joinery elements, but this version is more labor-intensive.
