In 2010 the first edition of “Woodworker’s Guide to SketchUp” was published as an interactive PDF. At the time it was possible to embed videos within the PDF book. In 2015 the book and videos were updated to reflect changes in the program and more efficient techniques. In addition to being the first book published on using SketchUp for woodworking, Woodworker’s Guide to SketchUp was one of the few books to take advantage of this format. I thought it was a great idea, and the ideal way for anyone to learn how to use computer software.
As with any new technology there were issues with viewing the videos seamlessly in Adobe Acrobat Reader. These had to do with getting the correct permissions and settings for playing the videos. Each new version of Acrobat Reader and Windows and Mac operating systems required tinkering with the settings. What was once the video player to never use became the video player to always use. This situation become easier to deal with as the years passed, until in 2020 when Adobe’s Flash software reached its “end of life”.
Flash was used to generate the video player controls that appeared with each video and allowed readers to pause, rewind and control the volume of the video. The controller is essential for this format to be useful. When Flash was given the ax I assumed Adobe would get right on it and find a work-around. I waited two years for Adobe to fix this, but they didn’t (and still don’t) seem to care. The videos still exist in the PDF, and they still function but readers can’t pause or rewind without obvious controls.
Two years after the demise of Flash the videos were posted on this website and the PDF was edited to link the online videos directly from the pages of the book. This was a solution, but not the best one. It has now been four years and Adobe still hasn’t resolved how to nicely include a video controller in a PDF.
The book and videos were both due for another update in 2024, but I decided to abandon the original format. The third edition of Woodworker’s Guide to SketchUp has companion video content available as a course on this site. The videos on this page are here as a service to my previous customers.
