My philosophy of teaching is to first master the basics and practice good techniques. With those skills in place learners move on to more complex and more advanced skills. When I started teaching others SketchUp I realized people learn in different ways and at different paces. Most of us need a combination of ways to learn effectively and the combination of written instruction with online videos is the ideal way to learn 3D modeling with SketchUp.

As a long-time woodworker I know the value of planning. Any project is more enjoyable when I arrive in the shop with a clear idea of what goes where, how things fit together and the sequence of the build. The addition of SketchUp to my toolkit made a huge impact on my efficiency and my confidence in the shop. Making a SketchUp model is close to the experience of building in real life, except mistakes are easily corrected, materials are free and the process doesn’t make any noise or dust.
I taught myself how to use SketchUp at a time when resources were scarce. It took a lot of time and I made every possible mistake. When I began teaching I realized that almost every struggles with the same hurdles, and the methods I teach to overcome those bring results in a short period of time. I go through the entire process; from installation and set up of the program to making detailed models and presenting them in a professional manner. Thousands of woodworkers have learned SketchUp through my online and live classes, my videos and my books.
In 2010 I published the first edition of “Woodworker’s Guide to SketchUp” as an interactive PDF with videos embedded within the text. I’ve learned how to use software from a combination of books and videos and at the time I thought (and still do) that a combination of the two forms is a great way to learn. Unfortunately the publishing world (and the folks who make publishing software) don’t agree with me and after recent changes to publishing software needed to find a workable method to transfer information.
In 2024 I published the third edition of “Woodworker’s Guide to SketchUp” as a spiral bound print book or as a PDF. I recorded 84 videos that follow the content of the book and they are part of a subscription that also includes all the text and videos from two other SketchUp books; “SketchUp for Kitchen Design” and “Building Blocks of SketchUp”. With a subscription you have access to all of these resources at a reasonable cost to you for as long as you need it. Cancel anytime and come back at the price you started with.
There is a subscription that is “Password Protected”. This is available to students in woodworking classes or programs that have arranged special access for their students. If you are enrolled in or teach in an accredited woodworking program, send an email for information about this program. SketchUp offers student licenses at a reasonable price and we make it easy for you to equip your students with the skills they need.
