SketchUp Classes 2018

It’s been a busy spring. I just completed a two-day SketchUp class. Earlier in April I taught a week-long woodworking class at MASW, and attended half of my local Society of American Period Furniture Makers chapter meeting. As often happens, several people at Marc Adams and the SAPFM meeting made a point to thank me for teaching them how to use SketchUp. Click here to read about how SketchUp will make you a better woodworker. I’ll be teaching at least two more SketchUp classes this year. Those classes will be held at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Franklin, Indiana. Click the class titles for information and to register.

SketchUp for the Beginner
July 14-15, 2018 at Marc Adams School of Woodworking, Franklin, Indiana

This class will get the SketchUp novice up and running. Starting with setting up an efficient drawing environment, we will work with simple shapes to master the basic concepts of 3D modeling, navigating in the model environment and understanding what is happening on the computer screen. If you’ve struggled to learn SketchUp on your own, or given up in frustration on 3D modeling, this class will open the door to 3D design.

  • Overcome the problems that frustrate SketchUp beginners
  • Get acquainted with computer design and its advantages
  • Master the basics of creating, moving and copying 3D objects
  • Understand how to navigate while creating a model
  • Explore design variations with a few clicks of the mouse
  • Develop plans quickly and spend more quality time in the shop

Go Deeper in SketchUp
July 21-22, 2018 at Marc Adams School of Woodworking, Franklin, Indiana

This class is for those who have taken a previous SketchUp class, or have some experience in 3D modeling with SketchUp. We will brush up on the basics then explore advanced topics for designing, planning and problem solving any woodworking project. In SketchUp, the design process is similar to the building process and you will learn how to create typical furniture forms, joints and details and learn to use the SketchUp board stretcher.

  • Learn efficient methods to plan your work, perfect the plan and extract useful information from your plan
  • Compare design variations and discover the power of copying
  • Prevent mistakes in the shop by building a virtual model
  • Use geometry from one half of a joint to create the matching half
  • Generate accurate three-dimensional cut lists showing every part and every joint

Registration for classes at MASW is through the school and space is limited!

Summer/Fall 2018

This class is in the planning stages and you can help choose dates and topics. I usually hold two-day classes with the first day focused on the basics of the SketchUp program and the second day tailored to the interests of those in attendance. I’m open to longer classes and if there is enough response we can have a class for interior designers, architects, builders, cabinetmakers, STEM teachers or any area of 3D modeling.

Please fill out the form below and I will schedule according to the responses. If you fill out the form you’ll be among the first to know when sign up is available. If you have any questions, or if you are interested in having me come to your group or organization for a class click here to send me an email.
