SketchUp Woodworking Class-Pittsburgh Area-May 6 & 7, 2017

Thanks to the organizing efforts of one of my readers I will be teaching a two-day SketchUp Woodworking class this May 6-7, 2017 in the Pittsburgh, PA area. This class will focus on woodworking, but the 3D modeling techniques you learn apply to using SketchUp for any application. Day one covers the basics of the program in a general way; we focus on getting around a 3D model, making things, and moving, copying and modifying those things after they exist. I provide several handouts, efficient techniques and over the shoulder coaching as you practice. On the second day we go over more advanced topics including details, rendering, printing and creating accurate cutlists with a couple clicks of the mouse.

If you’ve struggled with learning how to use SketchUp this class will get you over the hurdles that most new users face. If you have some experience with SketchUp you’ll learn new tricks and shortcuts that will improve your speed and your accuracy. My classes are a combination of instruction – my computer is hooked up to a big screen, and hands-on practice with individual coaching. Here are the details of this class:

LOCATION & HOURS:

Pine Community Center
100 Pine Park Drive
Wexford, PA 15090

This is just north of the city of Pittsburgh, close to the intersection of Interstates 76 & 79. There are several hotels within a short drive of the center. We will meet Saturday May 6 from 9am to 5pm and Sunday from 9am to 4pm. Each day we will take about an hour-long break for lunch. Lunch will be provided, nothing fancy, most likely pizza or subs.

WHAT YOU NEED: In a typical class we have people with a wide range of experience with SketchUp. Experience in SketchUp isn’t necessary, but you should be familiar with basic computer operations. Bring your own laptop, (or desktop) computer.

  • Make sure you have a three-button, scroll wheel mouse. If you work on a laptop, you’ll find the touchpad nearly useless. If you have a Mac, you’ll struggle if you try to use your Mighty or Magic mouse.
  • Screen size matters! If you have a laptop with a small screen (14″ or less), you will find it difficult to work in SketchUp.
  • Download and install SketchUp directly from the SketchUp website. It doesn’t hurt if you play around with it some before class or if you have SketchUp experience. There are some good video tutorials on the SketchUp website and here on ReadWatchDo.
  • Please note: when you download the program, it begins with a 30-day trial of SketchUp Pro. After the trial period ends, it will revert to the free version, SketchUp Make. The techniques shown in class will be possible with SketchUp Make, and we’ll discuss the differences between Make and Pro. (This post discusses the two versions of SketchUp).

Feel free to bring along a notebook. I provide several handouts during class and my SketchUp books will be available for purchase.

CLASS SIZE:

UPDATE – 4/13/2017 CLASS IS ON! A FEW SEATS ARE STILL AVAILABLE.

We need a minimum of 6 people to hold the class. I’ve set a deadline of April 22, 2017. If fewer than 6 are signed up by that date, the class will be cancelled and all payments made will be refunded in full. At the other end of the spectrum, the upper limit for this class is 12. If we reach that limit, I’ll establish a wait list and let you know if space becomes available.

COST & PAYMENT:

The fee to take this two-day class is $300. All payments will be made directly to me, Bob Lang through this website. There are two options for paying for this class. If you pay the entire fee at the time of registration, you’ll save $50.00.

OPTION A: PAY THE ENTIRE FEE WHEN YOU REGISTER AND SAVE $50 – TOTAL COST OF CLASS $250

OPTION B: PAY $150 DEPOSIT WHEN YOU REGISTER AND $150 BALANCE BEFORE CLASS

After you register you will receive a confirmation of your payment through PayPal. If you have a balance due you will receive an invoice for the balance. If I cancel this class, all payments will be refunded in full.
