Marc Adams School of Woodworking is a special place and I’ve been invited to teach a few classes at MASW in 2017. It is the largest woodworking school in the country with an incredibly well-equipped shop and an experienced staff to keep things flowing. It’s always a pleasure for me to spend a week or a weekend at the school and I’m looking forward to next year’s line up. May 8-12, 2017 Stickley Bridal Chest
This is a Gustav Stickley design from the early 20th century, although my version looks more contemporary. Click here for an image of an original in quartersawn white oak. When I built the piece at right for the November 2005 issue of Popular Woodworking I wanted to make the point that good design is timeless, so I used different woods, jatoba for the frame and quilted maple veneer for the panels.I also used aromatic cedar for the bottom so it smells nice when you open it.
This is a “bring your own materials” class, so you can make yours out of whatever wood you like. The panels can be veneered or they can be solid wood. This is a good introduction to mortise and tenon joinery, with a bit of trickery at the corners of the legs.
I’ve been teaching woodworkers how to use SketchUp at MASW for quite a few years now. This is a weekend class so on Saturday we work through understanding the basics of SketchUp, what to watch out for and how to use the program to pretend you’re building for real. On Sunday we’ll explore things like joinery, cutlists, printing and rendering.
Bring your own laptop (or other computer) and no matter what level of experience you have with SketchUp you will leave with a better understanding and the ability to do things in SketchUp you didn’t think were possible. I show techniques that work efficiently and I’m good at spotting what it is that is holding you back from 3D modeling.
On my first visit to the Gamble house, this was the first piece of Greene & Greene furniture that I saw. The original lives in the restroom of the garage. The Gamble house has a pretty nice garage and the restroom was there so the chauffeur wouldn’t need to enter the main house. Today the garage is the bookstore and I arrived a bit early for the tour. I had driven from Las Vegas that morning and hadn’t stopped along the way. As I left the restroom I noticed this piece and decided I would build it someday.
This was a project for the April 2009 issue of Pop Wood. I built this from some birds-eye cherry that I had been hoarding for several years. This weekend class is also “bring your own materials” so any nice wood you care to use will work. The case itself is rather simple, but the overall proportions and subtle details make it a special piece. This will be a fun weekend and if time allows I’ll show slides of other original Greene & Greene pieces.
