In the course of studying Arts & Crafts style furniture for many years, I’ve also had the privilege to see many beautiful works in other media. Glass, prints and pottery are some of my favorite forms and they all possess a similar charm and appeal as does good Craftsman furniture. If you’re a fan of Arts & Crafts pottery you recognize this image as the product of the Grueby Tile & Faience Company.
My rendition is carved from solid basswood, then hand colored. The frame is solid curly maple, with a rich brown dye stain. The entire piece is sealed with shellac and topcoated with a minimal sheen lacquer. The frame measures 15-3/8″ wide x 13-1/8″ tale. The frame is about 7/8″ thick. I use some machinery for initial preparation of the stock, then all of the carving, coloring and finishing is done by hand.
From a distance (like across the room) this appears to be a painting or a print. As you get closer the depth of the carved details becomes apparent; it draws you in to take a closer look.
