Of course I’m going to tell you that the “New Woodworker’s Guide to SketchUp” is the best resource available for woodworkers to get up to speed in 3D modeling – I wrote it and published it. An opinion from someone else would be better. I believe that books (and digital books like this with embedded video) are valuable for the content inside and should be priced accordingly. Hardly anyone in the publishing business agrees with me.
The current thinking is that books are now commodities (that’s a direct quote from the former CEO of the publishing company I formerly worked for) and as such there isn’t anything wrong with publishing similar works with nearly the same title (something another major woodworking publisher and my former employer have both unashamedly done). It’s a game they play so that they all show up in an online search and the guys selling commodities hope you’ll bite at the lower price.
Earlier today I stumbled across a review of my book from Highland Woodworking’s “Wood News Online”. J. Norman Reid goes into significant detail about what my book is like, why I shouldn’t call it a book but a “learning program”, how it helped him learn SketchUp and how knowing how to use SketchUp will make your life as a woodworker easier and better. I hope you’ll take the time to read this review if you’re on the fence about buying the most expensive resource instead of the least expensive.
