This piece is has sold, but I’d be happy to make another especially for you. Send me an email for details.

The design for this carving is based on a ceramic tile design originally made by the Grueby Tile & Faience Company in the early 20th century. The hand-carved and colored solid basswood panel is 7″ square and the solid sapele (African mahogany) frame is 11-7/8″ square. The frame is colored with a dark brown aniline dye, sealed with shellac then top-coated with a lacquer finish.

The carving is colored with light-fast watercolors, and is also sealed with shellac and top-coated with lacquer. This iconic image from the Arts & Crafts period will be a welcome addition to your home.

I enjoy art that draws you closer to it, and this carving succeeds in doing that. It’s a wonderful image, and the carving adds depth and dimension. I use some machinery for initial stock preparation, but all of the carving, coloring and finishing is done by hand.

I have a number of carvings available, many are based on graphics from the American Arts and Crafts period of the early 1900s.

In addition to the carvings I have in stock, I also accept commissions. As I was completing this small piece, I couldn’t help but envision an entry door with a similar image. If that appeals to you, get in touch and we’ll talk about the possibilities.
