Woodworker’s Guide Featured in Woodworker West

WWW1601_8879The new issue (January/February 2016) of Woodworker West Magazine includes an excerpt from my book “Woodworker’s Guide to SketchUp”. My thanks to Ron Goldman for reaching out and including this. As a small, independent publisher it is an uphill battle to reach a broader audience for this unique guide book to using 3D modeling to plan woodworking projects of all kinds.

Since I originally published “Woodworker’s Guide to SketchUp” in 2010, thousands of woodworkers are now virtually building their projects on their computers and heading to the shop with valuable information that makes real woodworking more efficient and more fun. Check out Woodworker West Magazine and buy the current issue (or better yet subscribe). Even if you’re from the east you’ll find a great magazine with relevant information and a different approach than the other magazines.

Here is the opening to the article:

I’ve been making stuff from wood for more than forty years, and designing and drawing projects for almost that long. Along the way I realized that thorough planning makes for more enjoyable and more productive time in the shop. If I know how a project will go together before I start cutting wood, I can concentrate on doing my best work in the shop. I’m not sidetracked by math problems or design decisions.

I was trained in manual drafting and have also used AutoCAD extensively. When I became adept at modeling in SketchUp, I became a better woodworker, as have most people I know who have learned how to use this program. I make more accurate plans in less time, and that gives me more time in the shop. My shop time is more enjoyable because I’m not interrupting the building process to solve a design problem, or fix something I missed while planning.
