This is a hand carved, hand painted rendition of the Hebrew word Chai. It means life, now and in the hereafter. The carving is solid basswood, and the frame is solid sapele with black walnut pegs securing the mortise and tenon joints. The frame and background are colored with aniline dye, the painting on the carved letter is done with light-fast watercolors.

The frame measures about 11-1/2″ wide and 10-3/4″ high, the exposed part of the panel is 7-3/8″ wide and 7″ high. The finish is lacquer over a shellac sealer.

Concept, design and coloring of the carving by Joyce Lang. The design of the frame is a collaboration by Joyce and Robert Lang in the style of California architects Charles and Henry Greene. Carving, construction of the frame and final finishing by Robert W. Lang.
