This is a reproduction of a Gustav Stickley No. 70 Music Cabinet in solid quartersawn white oak. The cabinet stands 47″ high, is 20″ wide and 16″ deep. The top and bottom are attached to the sides with pegged through tenons. The paneled back is joined with mortise and tenon joints, as is the outer frame of the door. One feature of the door that departs from original versions of this piece are the “mitered mullions”. This type of construction was found on early Stickley pieces, but by the time these music cabinets were made, simpler lapped construction of the door had become the standard.

The door features 10 individual panes of amber colored hammered glass, held in place with individual mitered stops. The door pull is hand hammered copper, an excellent reproduction made by Gerry Rucks. The dark color is achieved with aniline dye followed by a coat of amber shellac to warm the color tone. Several coats of clear shellac complete the surface, which has been hand rubbed and waxed. Inside the cabinet are four solid wood adjustable shelves. Original examples of this piece had “fixed shelves in line with the mullions”, and the holes for adjusting the shelves are arranged to align the shelves to the mullions.
